The Campbell Student Union may soon feature stained glass windows after an
aggressive fundraising initiative by Buffalo State.
The Student Giving Committee has been working on a campaign to place two
stained glass windows featuring the Buffalo State crest into the Union before
commencement.
According to Kristen Catalano, assistant director of Student Life for Greek Life and
Student Activities, 18 of the recognized fraternities and sororities participated in the
campaign.
"The Inter Greek Association was happy to assist with the most ambitious
fundraising initiative in Buffalo State's 141-year history," Catalano said. "I want my
students to know there are many ways to make a difference."
The total cost of the windows is $3,756. So far, the committee has collected over
$2,500 in student gifts from more than 120 individual student donors and the Greek
organizations that fundraised as part of their philanthropy project.
"Every day when we walk past and through the Union we will be reminded that
together we can make little things happen," said Anna Morton, a member of the
Student Giving Committee. "I believe that it inspires unity, hope and gratitude from
our students."
The committee was started by graduate student Meghan Coyne, and the campaign
kicked off on Feb. 27.
"Several schools across the nation have Student Giving Campaigns, but this is the
first time that Buffalo State has executed an appeal focused solely on securing
student donors," Coyne said.
The committee traveled to all of the residence halls to speak with the students about
the campaign, the windows, and how they can make a gift toward the windows.
Coyne said that they will also be tabling in the Campbell Student Union on April 1,
16 and 18.
"The Inter Greek Association was such a crucial part of the fundraising," Coyne said.
"They not only raised a considerable amount of money for the windows, but also
helped generate excitement about the campaign."
Coyne also said that students can use their Bengal Bucks in order to make a gift.
"We have been emphasizing the fact that the windows will be funded completely
by students, which I personally feel is really awesome," Coyne said. "The idea of
student giving was a foreign concept to most."
Coyne also said that students are able to use their Bengal Bucks in order to make a
gift.
Members of the Student Giving Committee are hopeful about what the windows will
mean to students.
"The window will be a tangible object of their gift," said Christy Tolevski, a member
of the Student Giving Committee. "They can literally see the results of their
donation."
The campaign will finish at the end of April, however, the date for the unveiling of
the windows has yet to be announced.
"I have already seen a culture of philanthropy beginning to form at Buffalo State,
which was one of our major goals in doing the campaign," Coyne said.
Although the goal is to unveil them at commencement, the committee is still short
of its goal and need increased participation from students in order to purchase the
windows.
"I love being involved in making this happen," Morton said. "Getting students to
participate and sharing the excitement of this campaign was great."
Once the campaign is over, there is hope that the Student Giving Committee will
continue to run similar campaigns on campus.
"I knew that I was donating for a cause that I think is important," Tolevski said.
"I'm hoping that based on the accomplishments of the committee this semester,
more students will be encouraged to participate next year and the committee along
with the campaign itself will continue to grow and evolve each year," Coyne said.
