WBNY celebrates 30 years with concert, expansion

This October marks 30 years on-air for Buffalo State's own student-run radio
station, WBNY 91.3 FM, which hosted its "30th Anniversary Concert" this past
weekend at the Performing Arts Center in Rockwell Hall.
Friends, fans and family gathered for a great time listening to original and classic
tunes of varied genres ensuring enjoyment for any musical preference, much like
the weekly lineup for WBNY.
The show rocked out Rockwell Hall as local talent included the trip-hop sounds of
Dotson Moon, rap-rock hybrid group Intent to Sell, local favorite Whiskey Reverb
and the rhymes of Buffalo State alumnus Drew Hartman, a.k.a. Dr. Ooo.
Belated Buffalo native and Super Freak himself Rick James also made an appearance
in spirit as Whiskey Reverb closed out their set with "Give It to Me Baby," inciting an
onstage dance party.
WBNY Production Director and Student Engineer Scott Gattie said he thinks the
bands did an incredible job considering how much work and preparation led up to
the night.
"The whole night of celebration was just pure exhilaration and it'll definitely be one
of the highlights of my time here at Buff State," Gattie said.
Underwriting Director Nikki Styliades said she thinks it was great to have so many
supporters come out for the 30-year celebration.
Station General Manager Nick Stutzman elaborated on the significance of 30 years
on-air.
"It means so much. Not only to the station, but to the school, to the students and to
the community," he said. "There have only been a select few radio stations able to
withstand the time and I think it says a lot about WBNY."
Thirty years is an accomplishment considering the station is funded almost entirely
by the United Students Government and is in competition with major markets in the
area.
The students fuel the success of WBNY by creating and hosting their own talk
shows, keeping up on current events in and around the campus and of course
developing and hosting music based shows that showcase the broad range of
musical taste among the various DJs.
Programming for the station is based on collaboration between the E-Board
members allowing individuals the freedom to come up with their own content and
flow.
In addition to the student effort, alumni have remained involved in the station
adding experience and insight to the energy and effort given by the students.
"Alumni influence WBNY to this day even if it's just their presence," Stutzman
said, "but also on the airwaves, being able to mentor us as students and help propel
the station further."
Alumni serve as an integral part of the station, providing networking opportunities
to students and sharing experiences and lessons both from working at the station
and in professional broadcast settings to future generations.
This type of relationship provides a solid groundwork for students new to radio as
well as establishes a community for those who have worked at WBNY in the past.
WBNY has another reason to celebrate as the Federal Communications Commission
has recently granted permission to upgrade from a 100-watt to a 1,000-watt
broadcasting antenna, allowing them to cover the majority of the Buffalo/Metro
area.
"It's going to impact the radio station immensely and in every facet," Stutzman
said. "It opens up our listenership ten-fold."
This development will allow the station to showcase the student's on-air talent to
Buffalo and its surrounding areas.
"Before we were mostly in the Elmwood Village, once the new antenna goes up we'll
be all over WNY," Styliades said.
