Visual Arts Board "Currently" making masterpieces

Student artists have been invited to join the Buffalo State Visual Arts Board in an experimental
and creative process to create the "Currently" Open Studio Event and Exhibition.
"Currently" is a biannual event, and this semester the exhibition represents 18 artists, with 32
works on display.
Artists were encouraged to create works during a two-week open studio, from Feb. 4 to Feb. 15,
in the Dr. Margaret E. Bacon Gallery in Upton Hall 234. Everyone was welcome to stop in and
be a part of the brainstorming that took place before this finished product.
Glen Stewart, President of the VAB and a senior majoring in sculpture, said "Currently" let the
community share in the process of art making.
"The idea behind [the open studio and exhibition events] centers on creating an open dialogue
amongst fellow artists and the community at large while sharing in art making," Stewart said.
This week, the works created during the open studio are on display every day in the gallery until
Friday, when a closing reception will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is an open event, with
food and opportunities to meet the artists.
Senior Shawn O'Rourke, a painting major with a minor in art history and the curator of
"Currently," said this exhibit is vital and lively for Buffalo State.
"This exhibition is community-driven," O'Rourke said. '"Currently' is creating community
while artists are also creating artwork throughout this challenging, yet successful progression.
This open studio and exhibition let artists fall back in love with the process. This art show is for
everybody. You'll see colorful, lively and bright artwork."
Stewart said that those who attend the exhibition would see work by a diverse group of students.
"There will be sculptures, ceramics, drawing, paintings, and mixed-media work," he said.
"Currently" debuted last semester and was a success. Since students knew about it now, word
spread and the exhibition grew this semester. Though, the experience will be completely new this
time, with entirely new art work being displayed by students who come from all different majors,
whether they're VAB members or not. O'Rourke said that the VAB would like to continue
bringing in people who are passionate about art and keep this unique exhibition going every
semester.
Jeremiah Kirby, a senior majoring in painting with a minor in sculpture, credited this exhibition's
success to the rare opportunity it gave people. Rather than just seeing the physical end, people
were invited to be a part of the active and physical process of creating the exhibition along the
way.
"Everyone sees the finished product, and it's fun to see what goes into it," Kirby said.
Along with the growth of "Currently," Kirby said that it also has been enjoyable to watch the
VAB's membership expand.
"The VAB has grown in the past year, and this event helps us to grow, but also, the event is here
because we're growing," Kirby said. "The growth has helped people to be excited about their
work."
All are welcome to come create, share and converse at "Currently" before it ends this Friday.
