Extra steps lead to success

Once you graduate from high school you can go in one of two directions: college or work. Once
you make that choice, one question should be asked: are you satisfied with where you are?
A lot of times, when the answer is no, people decide to go to college to further their education
in a specific major in hopes of getting their dream job. If you decide to work straight out of high
school, because you want money now, you still may ask yourself down the road what exactly
you're doing with your life.
Whatever the case may be, I'm here to tell you something: work harder than the next person to
achieve your dreams and welcome to the slowest job market in 20 years.
Now I didn't say that to scare people, but instead, to motivate to my colleagues that it's a cold
world out there, and nothing will be handed to you.
I could simply sit here and go on about how you need to do this, and you should do that, but I
decided to give some helpful hints on how to impress future employers.
The first thing you should do is research. Find out all the information about that company or
business you plan on working for. Look for what those companies and businesses are looking for
in that specific position. Call and ask questions - it's only to benefit you.
Upon doing this, look for opportunities to intern for a company or business in the field you are
interested in. It doesn't have to be the specific company you want to work for, but instead any
company that will give you a chance to get your foot in the door. It's all about experience.
Once you apply for an internship you must have the essentials to bring with you to the internship.
A big thing employers look at are letters of recommendation and resumes. Look to get letters
from an old or current job, teachers or anybody that will look to help you. Resumes are crucial
because employers want to see what experience you have in the area, but if not they more than
anything want to see what you have up to this point.
To enhance your resume another area where you can enhance your chances of getting that
internship is by getting involved in school. Look for clubs in your field and really look to make a
difference. It's simply not enough anymore just to go to school, graduate and move on.
Before it was ok just to have a degree. But in the technology age, it's simply not enough to have
the smarts. If you are a journalism major looking to become a writer, get involved with The
Record. If you are a broadcast major looking to make it on television or radio, volunteer at BSC-
TV or WBNY if they have it. There are plenty of opportunities at school if you're willing to
grasp them.
Going above and beyond is what it takes now to make a difference and for you to get the job you
dream of having. This process won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination, but you also have
to be real with yourself and others and ask yourself one simple question: am I happy with my
life?
If your answer is no, today's the day you take action to make a difference and that starts with
you. Don't do what's good enough. Do what makes you happy.
