Nutritional values would aid campus-wide health

Many students enjoy grabbing a bite to eat in the retail section of campus dining.

They have just about everything from burritos and pizza to sandwiches and
salads. Those who are more health-conscious may go for a salad or a sub, but
it's often hard to stick to a diet. Sometimes you just want to take a big bite into a
greasy burger or a slice of pizza.

I think that some of the major menu items in each of the different retail
establishments should have the amount of carbohydrates, calories and fats listed
next to them.

I love the food in retail. It's quick, convenient and tasty. However, I have to
remind myself that a lot of the food isn't meant to be consumed daily. As I debate
the decision between the salad and the burrito, I wonder how more health-
conscious people can get a salad or a sub every day and avoid the siren call of
the pizza and burger stands next door. For vegetarians, it may be easier. But I
imagine even the healthiest person needs a break from their diet every once in a
while.

If some of the food items had the fat, calorie and carb contents listed, then the
calorie-counters and carb-trackers can splurge for that pizza, burrito, or burger
from time to time.  I'm not saying that the salads and subs aren't just as tasty as
the less-healthy options, but sometimes there is a need to spice up one's diet.

There are also additional benefits for those with diabetes. "Carb counting" is a
technique that many diabetics use to control their blood sugar levels. Foods that
contain carbohydrates raise blood sugar, and diabetics should watch how many
of these types of foods that they eat each day.

At home it is easier to know what you are putting into your body, because the
label on the back of the package tells you everything that the food item contains.

When you are out and about and stop at some random restaurant for food, you
do not know everything that is in it. Listing the fat, calorie, and carb contents of
some of the major food items in retail would create more awareness for what is
in our food, and additional convenience for the diabetics and health-conscious
students and faculty. Dieters can splurge on the occasional burger or slice of
pizza. Diabetics can keep better track of their blood sugar levels. Everyone wins.

Some might argue that it's too much of a hassle to take all of the menus off of
the wall and then put them back up with the additional health information, but
even an ordinary paper print-out of the information taped in a convenient place
will suffice. Ideally, all restaurants should do this with all menu items. However,
even a bit of additional health information for a few food items is better than
no health information at all. By doing this here at Buffalo State, we can set an
example to other college campuses and maybe even local restaurants to keep
their customers informed about what they eat.
