Offensive woes plague Bengals

The Buffalo state men's soccer team had a hard time getting on track in last weekend's Fredonia Classic,
but they had an even harder time finding the score sheet.

The Bengals (0-4) fell to Houghton 4-0 on Friday and capped off their tournament with a 1-0 overtime
loss to Penn State Behrend Saturday.

Sporting a relatively new team, the Bengals are finding it tough to score goals early in the season.

"Out of a roster of 28 players we have 17 new players on the team," head coach Rudy Pompert
said. "It's going to take time for us to gel together with a lot of inexperience, but I'm looking towards the
future."

On Friday, Houghton (1-1-1) took an early lead just three minutes into the game and led 2-0 at halftime.
Houghton then added two insurance markers in the second half to put the game in cruise control.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Huntoon made just two stops for the Bengals, who were outshot 10-5.
Houghton's Tyler Mastin made two saves en route to a shutout.

Jonathan Figueroa, Taylor Ross, Michael Dix and Brady Robinson all tallied goals for the Highlanders.

Despite a better effort by the Bengals on Saturday, but they still came up short, losing 1-0 in overtime to
Penn State Behrend.

While controlling much of the play in the first half, the Bengals out-shot the Lions 10-3. Buffalo State
couldn't capitalize on its stellar play and went into the half tied at zero.

The Bengals outshot the Lions in the game, 15-10, but Lions' forward Jimmy Belack scored on a shot that
turned out to be the game-winner.

"We played real well Saturday," said assistant coach Michael Chieffo. "It's a shame we lost the game
but we were playing against the reigning conference champions in Penn State, so our players definitely
shouldn't put their heads down because that was the cream of the crop and we battled all the way to
the end."

Junior defender Brett Lanham sees the team's performance over the weekend as an opportunity for
team growth.

"I thought we left a lot on the field today but going forward we know what we need to work on and we
can build from this weekend," Lanham said.

A common theme echoed by coaches and players was a lack of creating scoring chances. The team has
scored just two goals in four games while allowing 11 this season.

"Individual mistakes have been a problem for us early, but a lot of that has to do with inexperience and
new players playing with each other so we'll get on top of that to gain that chemistry for a late season
run starting within our conference," Pompert added.

The coaches both agreed that with the loss of last year's captains Tony Schiappa and Thomas Karanas, it
will be up to some of the returning players to step up their individual play for the team.

After getting off to a fast start last season with wins in their first four games, the Bengals find
themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum this year.

The Bengals will look for their first win of the season this when they battle D'Youville at 7 p.m. tonight at
Riverside High School. They will then play host to Daemen at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
