The Buffalo State men's and women's track and field teams made their presence
felt at the Sparky Adams Invitational in Berea, Ohio last weekend, winning
several events and bringing home a school record.
"It was very cold but overall I think the team ran decent and did a good job
of adjusting to the temperatures and put on a good display," assistant coach
Markus Allen said.
The men's team won four events, including two by Jalen Law, who finished first in
the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.96 seconds and won the 200-meter dash in
22.02 seconds.
"Jalen had a good outing and I feel like he ran himself back into shape and that
there will be more to come for him this season as our goal is to get him ready for
nationals," Allen said.
Law seemed to agree.
"I was a little disappointed with my times," he said, "but like coach said, this is a
sign because it's not my best but I will be (at my best) come nationals."
Shaun Winter and Kyle Abron followed suit. Winter won the long jump (6.79m) to
finish first and Abron finished third in the triple jump (13.40m).
Other strong performances came from Jared Quinn, who finished second in the
3,000-meter steeplechase (9:56:11), and Jimmy Campbell, who finished third
and fourth respectively in the 400 (50.42) and the 200-meter (22.56) dashes.
Travis DeMuth finished third in the 110-Meyer hurdles (16.00).
Davon Rollins finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.70) while Jonathan
Prevost and Kyle Foster both placed fifth in their events, Prevost (59.68) in
the 400-meter hurdles and Foster (34:13:14) in the 10,000-meter run. Jordan
Fuentes broke his own school record in the discus (45.81m).
The jumpers stood out the most for the women.
Jessica Walker led the group, winning the triple jump (10.78m) and finishing
second in the long jump (4.90m).
Alexis Whelan finished second in the triple jump (10.50m) and third in the long
jump (4.87m). Samara Sutton finished fourth in each, going 4.80m in the long
jump and 9.96m in the triple jump.
Jazmin Dunham, who was named SUNYAC Runner of the Week, placed first
in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 14.35 seconds. The time established a new
school record.
Dunham praised her hurdles coach Mario Hicks, noting that he did a good job
helping her adjust to running the hurdles, especially outside, despite being more
familiar with inside hurdle running.
Allen had words of praise for Dunham.
"Jazmin was very aggressive and technically sound and she also will rise to the
occasion come nationals time," Allen said.
Nia Holmes added a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07:87) and
Patrice Johnson was fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.44).
The teams will travel to Roberts Wesleyan Saturday.
