Bengals improve record to 7-3 over weekend

If the team's performance in the Marcia French Invitational at Baldwin-Wallace University last weekend
was any indication, the 2012 Buffalo State volleyball team has vastly improved.
The Bengals went 2-2 in the tournament - the same tournament in which they didn't win a match just a
year ago - improving their overall record to 6-3.
"It's been a whole 180," sophomore Sam Parente said of the team's apparent improvement. "This is a
completely different team and a whole different atmosphere. Things are just clicking more this year. We
have stronger hitters, the passes are just there, the setting is there - everything is coming together very
well."
In Friday's matches, the Bengals lost to Baldwin-Wallace in four sets before defeating Westminster in a
close four-set match.
The Bengals fought hard against the Yellow Jackets in the opener but ultimately fell 24-26, 15-25, 29-27
and 22-25. Freshman Hannah Renaldo led the squad with 14 kills. Junior Kelsey Bashore had 40 assists to
go with 13 digs and junior Sarah Horvath had nine kills and 22 digs. Parente added 12 kills.
"The loss against Baldwin-Wallace came down to the speed of their offense. A lot of our new players
weren't used to seeing that, and that comes with experience," head coach Maria DePeters said. "It was
a great defensive game for us."
In the late match, the Bengals beat Westminster 34-32, 25-23, 27-29 and 25-13. Parente and Renaldo
had 19 and 16 kills, respectively. Bashore had 55 assists and junior Chelsea Moore had 45 digs.
On Saturday, the Bengals closed out the invitational by beating Franciscan in straight sets before
eventually losing to Wooster in a five-set match.
Against Franciscan, strong play from freshmen Kayla Pyc and Hannah Santoro helped the Bengals prevail
25-21, 25-22 and 25-17. Pyc had a team-high 10 kills, while Santoro led the Bengals with 14 assists.
Sherrell McLean added seven kills and Moore had 24 digs and three aces.
In the later contest, the Bengals battled back-and-forth with Wooster but lost 14-25, 29-27, 20-25, 25-23
and 9-14. Renaldo and Parente each had 12 kills. Bashore dished out 35 assists to go along with 22 digs
and Horvath had seven kills, 17 digs and three aces.
Renaldo's performance on both days led to her earning All-Invitational Team honors.
"(Renaldo) really stepped up defensively," DePeters said. "Offensively, she was killing the ball and she
really was one of the main reasons we won as much as we did."
The Bengals improved to 7-3 on Tuesday, defeating host University of Rochester 30-28, 25-23, 20-25 and
25-22.
The Bengals' attack was paced by Bashore, who had 36 assists and 14 digs. Moore and Horvath chipped
in 24 and 22 digs, respectively. McLean added nine kills and six blocks.
At the same time last season, the Bengals boasted a 3-7 record, suggesting the team has improved
significantly.
"We have a lot of standout freshmen this year with a lot of experience and knowledge to the game,"
DePeters said. "We have a lot of key returners and it makes for a great duo with all the new players."
Bashore attributed the improvement to the experience that some of the team's returning players have
picked up.
"I feel like last year we just weren't ready for some of these teams," Bashore said. "They were the first
teams we had seen with such a fast offense and we weren't well enough prepared. We knew how hard
we were going to have to work and we were definitely better prepared."
The Bengals travel to Hoboken, N.J. this weekend to participate in the Stevens Ducks Classic at the
Stevens Institute of Technology. DePeters thinks her squad should be successful.
"We're going to see some teams that are comparable to teams that we have seen thus far," DePeters
said. "In (the Cortland Dragons Classic) we were put into one of the hardest brackets and the
competition in Ohio is very challenging.
"We are where we need to be going into this tournament."
