Extra sports, extra fun

Throughout the fall semester, the Buffalo State athletics program is offering students the
opportunity to become involved in intramural and recreational sports.
Compared to regular collegiate sports, intramural sports present students a chance to
participate, without any tryouts or long-term commitments.
"We try to make sure there is something going on every couple of weeks," said Christian
Ozolins, assistant football coach.
There are eight different events offered during the semester, including soccer, flag
football and dodgeball.
"We try to make it as simple as possible so kids can enjoy themselves and they are not
locked in," Ozolins said. "It's a great program because it's a little less competitive."
Most of the events offered consist of one-day tournaments, so students don't have to
worry about missing games.
Ozolins has been involved in intramural sports at Buffalo State for the past eight years
and said that it is an evolving process.
"Its been a growing process and hopefully, it will continue to grow, especially with the
facility upgrade that will be taking place in the next 18-24 months," Ozolins said.
Ozolins said that many of the students who participated found it to be an enjoyable
experience.
"We've had great feedback from kids," Ozolins said. "They've enjoyed everything we've
offered. We give a good product for what we are from an intramural standpoint."
Sean Littlejohn, a senior sociology major, has played softball and basketball over the past
few years and had only good things to say about his time involved with intramural sports.
"The intramural program at Buffalo State is fantastic," Littlejohn said. "I will definitely
be playing again. Not to mention my intramural softball team, "Poles and Holes" are
back-to-back champions."
According to Ozolins, the hardest part of recruiting people is the fact that many people
don't know about it, especially commuters.
"The biggest struggle is that most commuters leave campus," Ozolins said. "The
downside is, without having a physical education requirement, some students never make
their way over to Houston Gym, which makes it a little difficult for people to know about
things."
The program not only gets students more involved, but it also opens their eyes to more of
what the college offers in the Houston Gym and the rest of the athletic department.
"The biggest thing is just to become involved" Ozolins said. "Not only do we offer open
recreation hours, but we also offer free fitness classes."
Overall, the intramural sports program has given students a chance to interact and enjoy
recreational activities.
"I believe intramural sports have been a great success because it brings our student body
together," Littlejohn said.
Some upcoming events include a co-ed volleyball tournament, a men's and women's
floor hockey league and a co-ed dodgeball league.
"I would encourage anyone who attends Buffalo State to play intramural sports,"
Littlejohn said. "It might be one of the most fun things that the college puts on here at
campus."
Students can go to www.imleagues.com/BuffaloState to sign up for events. Each event
requires a roster submitted by its deadline. More information can be found on Buffalo
State's website.
