Students live in lofts

Due to the closure of Tower Four for renovations, Buffalo State students without housing on
campus were forced to relocate to the Lofts at 136 in downtown Buffalo at the start of the fall
2012 semester.
The Lofts at 136, a student housing complex on North Division Street, was chosen to house
approximately 170 students, the majority being incoming transfer students. The renovations to
Tower Four started over the summer and are expected to be completed by July 2013.
During the state procurement process, a request for proposals was sent out to area hotels and
student apartment complexes. Location to the campus was a high priority, as well as the ability to
accommodate students and their needs. The Lofts at 136 met all the required specifications, said
Tim Ecklund, associate vice president for Campus Life.
Buffalo State students occupy approximately 60 units on floors one through three. The rooms
range from singles to doubles, with a kitchen and living room area. Wi-Fi internet access is also
available throughout the building. The deal made with the Lofts is temporary, as it is only in
place until all the renovations to the residence halls are completed, Ecklund said.
A deal is also being sought with a local community college to allow students access to a gym, he
said.
"We are in the process of working out a deal with ECC for Buffalo State students staying in the
lofts to use their fitness center," Ecklund said.
All students who were in need of housing have received housing assignments, he said.
While the Lofts offer some nice amenities, the inconvenience of not being on campus is one of
the concerns expressed by several students, he said.
"We are hoping to get students back on campus as space becomes available," Ecklund said.
Parking and bus schedules are some of the other issues students have expressed concern about.
There are not enough parking spaces for students, which forces them to park their cars blocks
away near abandoned buildings with no security cameras. Public transportation to and from
campus is the cause of other headaches, said John Wilson, a junior criminal justice major.
"It's really inconvenient for me to have to get up 45 minutes prior to my class to catch the bus,"
he said. "Then I have to wait an additional 45 minutes when my class is done to get back to the
Lofts."
Dan Anemone, a transfer student and English major, loves the complex, but has concerns about
the commute and issues with the fire alarm system.
"I don't like that the fire alarms go off so often when you are trying to sleep or doing
something," he said, "You have to run out of the building leaving your belongings unsecured."
