Students injured at USG camp

A Pride Alliance camping trip to Whispering Pines took a negative turn when the
balcony of the Alaimo Lodge collapsed while two members were standing on it last
Saturday.
The organization had reserved the cabin, located on the 615 acres of the camp near
Franklinville approximately an hour south east of Buffalo State, from Friday to
Sunday.
The first day of the trip, the organization enjoyed watching movies, playing games
and other camp activities, said treasurer Nickey Sereluca, one of the members who
attended the trip.
There were 16 members who attended the trip and were outside the cabin playing
hide and seek when the two students were standing on the balcony.
One suffered a twisted knee and the other a sprained hip.
They were taken to the Olean Hospital for treatment and were later released to
return in time to make s'mores.
President Shakora Purks said the two students have returned to classes.
The United Students Government employs a caretaker to oversee maintenance and
visiting groups at the camp.
Sereluca said the caretaker met them the first day of the trip to give them the keys
and make sure they had everything the group needed for the fire.
He is available anytime students need his assistance and stops in for random checks
at the cabins.
"He's not even 100 feet away, he's in a cabin at the top of the hill," Sereluca said.
The caretaker was the first person to respond to the collapse.
The cabin they stayed in was the larger of the two, with 60 beds, and didn't have an
occupancy limit posted.
The group members said they had never experienced problems in the past and plan
to keep their set weekend for camp next year since they have the budget line set up
for the trip.
"We're not going to tell students not to go," Sereluca said. "We hope they'll have
everything fixed up for the next group."
There are minimal requirements from the United Students Government to utilize
the camp, along with a $200 deposit which is refunded after the trip as long as
nothing was damaged by the students. They can also opt for a media cart rental for
$50.
USG owns, maintains and operates the camp through the mandatory student activity
fee.
