New York still plagued by Sandy

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is still being felt throughout New York, even
though residents are trying to go back to their normal lives.
SUNY has partnered with The American Red Cross to assist in the recovery efforts.
They are encouraging the SUNY family to help any way possible by donating money,
giving blood or by volunteering their time.
Buffalo State is also doing its part and is happy to partner with others to help in the
recovery efforts to help students and their families that are affected by the disaster.
"We will be happy to partner with others who wish to take further action to assist,
such as through fund raising and other efforts," said Charles Kenyon, associate vice
president and dean of students.
The college obtained food donations for a group of students who stayed on campus over
the Thanksgiving break due to their family homes being inaccessible from the hurricane.
The Dean of Students office has issued many notices to faculty and staff informing them
of students who have been absent due to hurricane sandy related issues.
The Dean of Students office is making available two support sessions for interested
students to share coping strategies and self-care suggestions.
The sessions started Monday. A second will be held at the Weigel Health Center from 2
to 3 p.m. Friday in room 203.
Stacy Kemp, a senior individualized studies major and Staten Island resident, said
Hurricane Sandy destroyed and brought chaos to her beloved hometown.
"My family has been staying with other family members because of the damage that
Sandy caused to our home and neighborhood," she said. "I had to stay with friends
over the break, because I don't have a house to go home to. My family and friends
are sending me photos of what used to be our home and it's just devastating to look
at."
Kemp also said she hopes to get some really good tips on how to deal with her loss
from going to the sessions. She said even though she lost most of her belongings, she
is happy that her family is alive and doing well.
"Having my family to share Christmas with is the best gift I could ask for," she said.
