Pride Alliance celebrates success with semi-formal

Celebrating pride awareness, diversity, and commemorating their success for this semester, the
Buffalo State Pride Alliance hosted an event called "Gay'la 2013: A Rainbow Carpet Affair" at 8
p.m., April 5, in the Assembly Hall.
Adding on to their accomplishments, the Pride Alliance hosted Dragstürbia, their biannual drag
show during the Union Bash in March. The organization brought in student and local performers
throughout Western New York.
The organization also represented Buffalo State at Club Marcella during College Warz, a battle
of the colleges throughout Western New York. Colleges come and show their support at Club
Marcella, and whoever wins the most points and shows their school spirit wins.
Buffalo State's team won College Warz and was provided with free pizza and drinks during
Dragstürbia.
Pride Alliance president Shakora Purks said that while they could not hold a banquet due to
USG restrictions, the organization wanted to have an event for their members and Buffalo State
students.
"Essentially it's our answer to not being able to have a banquet for this semester. We still wanted
to celebrate everything that we've done so far this year, and celebrate our members and the
community that we're in as well as the contribution they make and the contribution we make as a
group," Purks said.
The Pride Alliance took a different approach to their event by hosting a semi-formal dance.The
Assembly Hall was decked out with rainbow streamers, multi-colored lights, and signs with
the Pride Alliance logo. Some members also came in formal attire, while others opted to dress
casually.
During the first hour, food and refreshments were served while members and students had a
chance to socialize. The organization also hired a DJ.
Ruiz said that the catering services were provided and sponsored by Chartwells.
"Thanks to them we had a lot of food. We thought that we weren't going to have a lot of food.
The Pride Alliance also honored their members and organizations through a small awards
ceremony.
Melissa Ruiz, public relations officers of the Pride Alliance, said that they wanted to give their
gratitude to their members.
"We gave our thank you's to everyone who has participated in our events and members and
allies. We also recognized other organizations: UB LGBTA, Downtown Evergreen Center, Pride
U, and people from ECC were there. We just wanted to join together and celebrate the equality
and diversity that we've gotten so far," Ruiz said.
Ryan Gilliam, a junior broadcast journalism major, won an award for participating in the drag
shows (I just need the official title of the award that he received) said that he was grateful to the
organization for winning an award.
"It was great to be noticed by the peers in the group," Gilliam said.
Gilliam also mentioned that he was happy to tell his friends and family about his achievement.
The overall goal of the Gay'la 2013 was to let students and members to have fun during the
event.
"[We wanted them] to have a good time and we celebrated being together," Purks said, adding
that the organization hopes to have a second event like this in the near future.
