Union construction displaces third floor

The cement staircase in the center of the Campbell Student Union is slated to be destroyed by
90-pound jackhammers, starting later this week.
The demolition will take between 30 and 45 days, said Sarah Velez, associate director of
Student Life.
The work will take place from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily, to avoid overlap with most student
schedules.
"It would miss that window as much as it could, because it will be very loud," Velez said.
Over spring break, the entire third floor of the union will be shut down to allow construction to
continue. Organizations located on the third floor, Judicial Affairs, the dean of students and
Commuter Council will all be relocated to newly-created office space in the basement.
"Everyone is in the 11th hour, everything needs to be out next week," said Kevin Ward, an intern
helping to oversee construction efforts.
Members of Judicial Affairs have already checked out their new office space to make sure all
the necessary furniture, filing cabinets and equipment will fit when the movers begin packing
things up next week.
"I don't think it will be too bad," said Anna Cedri, a secretary in Judicial Affairs.
When the third floor shuts down, so will the Wi-Fi for the fourth floor. This will affect many
student organizations and United Students Government, which is located on the fourth floor.
Wi-Fi will still be available in both the retail and residential dining areas on the main floor, Velez
said.
Wi-Fi will be restored and organizations moved back up to their third-floor office space next
spring semester after construction is complete.
So far students have been accepting of the construction work, which began earlier this
semester.
"The students have been remarkably accommodating and understanding," Velez said.
For many students, their main concern is being able to maneuver around the union.
"I don't mind it, it's no big deal as long as you can get around," freshman Mike Reinig said.
The fourth floor will remain accessible throughout the construction project.
"It's not bad, it's just kind of in the way," said senior Richard Baumann, who is studying
mechanical engineering.
Ward said students seem excited to see the final project.
"I haven't heard anything bad from students," he said.
