USG continues to recruit new senators

As the student population increases, the United Students Government is also expanding. The USG
senate is opening its doors to more students, in order to create a more accurate representation of the
undergraduate student body.
In former years, the senate had a goal to recruit 20 senators to represent undergraduates. That number
has been increased to 40.
"We decided to up the number to 40 so we would have enough people to fill our senate," said Sara
Garfinkle, president of USG. "Now the 10,000 undergraduates can have enough representation."
So far, the USG senate consists of 21 students, about half the population they would like to have, said
Garfinkle. Although they still have recruiting to do, the USG staff is optimistic about their new goal.
"I think we will definitely make it," said Christina Germann, executive vice president of USG. "We have
more people to interview."
With over 11,000 undergraduates to represent, USG is doing all it can to get students involved.
Spreading the word at orientation, sending mass emails and passing out flyers are just some of the ways
USG is informing students about the open positions, Garfinkle said.
Some of the senator duties applicants should expect include attending a weekly senate meeting every
Tuesday at 8:45 p.m., serving on one of the standing committees of USG, working and attending events
and helping out organizations on campus.
"We're looking for students who are motivated, dedicated and really want to make an impact on
campus," Garfinkle said.
USG is not necessarily looking for one specific type of student; diversity is something they embrace, she
said.
"Every single person that we have on the senate is different," Garfinkle said. "They come from different
backgrounds and are a part of different areas of campus."
From commuters to non-traditional students to part-timers, all undergraduate students who pay an
activity fee and maintain a cumulative average of at least 2.0 are welcome to submit an application for
the USG senate.
"We would love to get more commuters involved," Germann said. "Most of our current staff are
residents."
Students who are interested in a position on the USG senate can fill out an application on the USG
website.
Before the applicants can be voted in, however, they will undergo an interview with Andrea Gustafson,
speaker pro tempore of USG.
"Applicants have to go through me first," Gustafson said. "I try to interview as many applicants as I get
in."
Applicants will then be voted on by the senate.
If voted in, the new senators will attend a mandatory senator training session, where they will learn
about their new role as a USG senator. The training session will also include education about the USG
constitution and budget, Gustafson said.
