Cultural getaway on campus

As part of the Year of the City, Buffalo State students are encouraged to view new exhibits at
the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College.

Students and staff can easily attend events and exhibits at the museum since the Burchfield sits
at the front of campus, showcases modern artwork and offers free admission for Buffalo State
faculty, staff and students.

One new exhibit, "Intersections," by Buffalo State graduate Jacqueline Tarry and fellow artist
Bradley McCallum, addresses the history and modern day problems of racial issues.

Both artists come from different cultural backgrounds and have intersected to bring attention to
the conflicts that still persist today.

Jacqueline said "Intersections", which started running Friday and ends Jan. 20, is very important
to her, as it is her homecoming.

Buffalo State students can view multimedia works by the artists touching on race issues,
identity, and the civil rights movements.

McCallum said the work is "Seductive and beautiful, and it draws people in, yet still causes them
to ask some questions," and the work causes viewers to consider "accountability to our actions
today."

"Race is a serious issue in America and people don't talk about it," Tarry said.

There are many eye-opening exhibits like "Intersections" that the museum is working on for
students to tour and learn from.

Through the museum's website, students can subscribe to have the exhibit schedule sent to
them, enabling students to have the calendar at hand. This makes it even easier for students to
experience all that the Burchfield Penney has to offer.

"The museum is a great introduction for students to their city, as it is the Year of the City at
Buffalo State. Students can learn about their new community and emerging artists," said Alana
Ryder, curator for public and academic programs at the Burchfield Penney. "It's a chance for
students to have a great informal break from the construction and other elements of school and
to see the city and the world in a new way."

Buffalo State sophomore, Jessica DuBois, said she agrees.

"I think the Burchfield is a good place for any student to relax and get some time to reflect on
thoughts," DuBois said. "(Students) should take some time to visit (the museum). With your
friends or by yourself, it's a great getaway."

Kathleen McMorrow Heyworth, head of marketing and public relations at the Burchfield Penney,
said the free "Second Fridays" are opening celebrations that are hosted by the museum on the
second Friday of every month and include openings, screenings, workshops, tours and other
special programs.

Buffalo State senior Bruce Wallace said he remembers attending one of the "Second Fridays"
last year.

"It was an exciting environment for the opening of an exhibit. There was a band and a lot of
energy," he said.

"Growing up around the corner, I watched as this unique building came to life. To see it
completed as I walked around campus, I felt proud to say, 'Wow this is on my campus.' The
beauty outside truly reflects the beauty inside," said former Buffalo State grad student Elizabeth
Lewin.

The museum has been a cultural and educational resource for students ever since.

"I've been to a couple film forums at the museum. They were really interesting. It's a really cool
place," sophomore Connor De Junco said.

Students have the opportunity to see some of the area's most interesting art for free. The
museum is an educational, cultural, and interesting activity for students to enjoy right on
campus.
