Music series brings new sound to Buffalo

This year at Buffalo State, the music department will be conducting "The World Music
Concert Series."
The World Music Concert Series consists of a variety of musicians that specialize in
music styles from around the world. This year will involve music from Australia, India,
Ireland, South America, The Caribbean and Africa.
In recognition of Buffalo State Colleges' Year of the City, the performers are either
alumni or have strong connections to Buffalo.
The kickoff of the concert series will be by Buffalo native Steve Baczkowski tomorrow at
6:20 p.m. in the Flexible Theater.
"I will be playing a series of solo improvisations on various wind instruments I've
collected from around the world, including the didjeridu, bawu, bamboo flute, baritone
saxophone, jaw harp and others," Baczkowski said.
Tiffany Nicely, lecturer in the music department, said she is pleased to bring awareness
of global cultures to students, one of the positive steps Buffalo State has taken to broaden
its worldview.
"We are actually starting with one of my all-time favorites, the didjeridu," Nicely said.
Nicely said she had the idea for the series to tie it into the World Music and Cultures
class she teaches, which requires students to attend two concerts and write reports on
their experiences.
Because the world music class is an Intellectual Foundations course, Nicely said she
approached Lisa Hunter, assistant dean for Intellectual Foundations, with the idea of
offering a world music series sponsored by Intellectual Foundations.
"With the full cooperation of Bradley Fuster, chair of the music department, Hunter
agreed and our series was launched for the first time," Nicely said.
"We are also lucky that this year's Anne Frank Project is hosting the performance, so that
it will be presented within the context of this worthwhile conference and so that more
people will be aware of it," Nicely said.
If all goes well, Nicely said she hopes to continue the series in future years.
Admission is free for Buffalo State students according to the music department website,
but a ticket is required for admission.
Free admission tickets are only available in person at the Rockwell Hall box office with
student ID. The box office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
