Great Lakes Center acquires more land near current facility

The Great Lakes Center at Buffalo State obtained 1.5 acres of property from the Division of Military and
Naval Affairs over the summer, which will increase the amount of storage available to the center and
assist in the research and projects being carried out on Western New York waterways.

The Great Lakes Center Field Station facility is located about four miles from Buffalo State's campus. At
the Field Station, students have access to Lake Erie, the Buffalo River and the Niagara River. Most of the
research done is staged from the Field Station using boats and other equipment.

Mark Clapsadl, the field station manager, said that the new land is going to be used for storage. There is
a building on the land that is going to be used to store boats and buoys.

"It makes it a lot easier for us to keep our equipment in good shape," he said.

Clapsadl also said that the additional land was a result of a three-way swap. Back in 2004, there was
a plan initiated between the West Side Rowing Club, Buffalo State College and the Division of Military
and Naval Affairs. The West Side Rowing Club obtained waterfront property, the Division of Military and
Naval Affairs moved to a different facility and Buffalo State obtained the 1.5 acre property.

Alexander Karatayev, the director of the Great Lakes Center, commented on the benefits this new land
will bring to the program and to students.

"In the short term it will be an excellent storage facility," he said. "In the long run we would like to build
a new building to promote our activity."

This new land is part of an effort to help get grant money and get more people interested in the
program, Karatayev said. As for any additional use to the building, storage seems to be the main
function.

"[The building] is not designed to be a teaching and research facility," he said.

The building, once used to train military and naval forces, will have a profound impact on students and
faculty alike, Karatayev said.

Students are strongly encouraged to look into the program. Anyone who has an interest in the
environment or in conducting research on one of the world's main sources of water is encouraged to
look at the Great Lakes Center website, he said.

According to the center's website, the mission of the center is to work with policy and decision-makers
on the health of the Great Lakes, through research on pollution and the different organisms inhabiting
the waterways. Several on-going research projects like the LENONS program, which examines the role
nutrients play in the lake, are working to provide scientific backing to sound environmental policies.
