The Buffalo State Jazz Ensemble is preparing to perform alongside University of
Rochester Eastman's School of Music professor Clay Jenkins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

The concert will be held under the direction of Rick Fleming, associate professor of
music and director of bands at Buffalo State.

Jenkins a professional trumpeter who said he has been playing since seventh grade,
is a very a highly regarded musician in and around the Western New York area.

He has worked with a vast amount of national musicians and has been a part of a
numerous orchestras, in addition to recording three live albums with the Kenton
band.

Jenkins has been a part of the teaching staff at the University of Rochester for over
12 years.

This is the first time Jenkins has partnered with the Buffalo State Jazz Ensemble and
said he is "looking forward to it."

The performances between the jazz ensemble and Jenkins will overlap, with Jenkins
performing some of his own arrangements with the Eastman School of Music
Faculty Jazz Quartet.

Among the quartet is Harold Danko on piano, Jeff Campbell on bass and Rich
Thompson on drums. Jenkins said he has high hopes that the audience will find the
performance on Friday evening very personal as well as approachable.

"It is acoustic music played by very dedicated jazz musicians," he said. "We enjoy
playing together and I feel our mutual love and respect of the music, and of each
other, is portrayed in our performances."

Fleming, who is also the director of the Jazz Ensemble at Buffalo State, said
he believed the audience should expect big things from the performance on
Friday. "The audience should expect to hear a good big band, with a large sound, and
some small combinations," Fleming said.

"The show is set to feature some traditional swing sets, along with contemporary
jazz as well," said Fleming. "We will have a variety of different songs so the audience
should expect to hear some different arrangements."

Fleming, as well as Jenkins, said he wants the audience to take with them a message
that this isn't just a typical jazz concert. This is a chance to show the students and
general audience of Buffalo State the more modern side of jazz that people don't get
to listen to anymore, he said.

This goes along with goal of the Buffalo State Jazz Ensemble since the beginning.

Fleming said they have set out to make sure the audiences they perform for will be
just as invested in the musicianship and attention to detail in their performances as
they are.

Fleming said he believes this concert will give them a chance to open up the minds
of students to the jazz art form.

The performance between Clay Jenkins and the Buffalo State Jazz Ensemble will take
place at 7:30 p.m. in Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.

Tickets are free for students with their student I.D and $10 for the general public.
