Parking issue not just space
By Aubrey Gibert

As a student at Buffalo State College, I think I speak for every student when I say that parking is
a BIG issue. Everybody talks about it, so I thought it should be addressed.
While I can sit here and complain about how there's not enough parking, I would rather talk
about some possible solutions or points of emphasis where Buffalo State could or should
improve.
First, I would like to stress my concern with the fact that the college has put an emphasis on
renovating and building on campus, while taking away parking lots for student drivers. While I
do realize that big portions of Buff State's student body are those from out of town, I also think
the college has put too much emphasis on them. I think there needs to be equal, if not more
emphasis on those attending Buff State who currently reside locally.
While I do like to see the college putting money into helping the students, I think equal funds
need to be put into building more parking lots or ramps to help them park. It's unfair that
commuter students have to walk all the way across the campus day in and day out while those
living on campus can just walk right outside and be at class.
Parking on campus requires a permit, which comes with an added fee. It is ridiculous that
students have to pay $75 just to park. I think parking permits should be included in tuition. If
tuition is to be increased, why shouldn't a parking permit be included when bus passes are?
Which brings me to my next issue: why do students who drive to school have to pay for a bus
pass? Why should I, along with the thousands of students who drive, have to pay for something
we don't use?
If a commuter's car breaks down, they most likely won't take the bus because they've never
done it before or don't know how. To have to pay for something I don't use disturbs me, and I
know it disturbs many other students and parents.
I think every student should be given the option, during registration, whether or not they'd rather
have a parking pass or bus pass. Whichever you choose would be noted and charged accordingly.
This may be an issue that many other colleges have. I still feel it is an issue that needs to be re-
visited. While it may take some time and advocacy, I believe I speak for many students when I
say parking is an issue.
