Free intramurals offer students opportunity for a good time

Intramural sports have kicked off with the spring 2012 semester
at Buffalo State College.

Intramural sports are an alternative to club and varsity sports
that give students a way to participate in an athletic activity of
their choosing without the long-term commitment. There are no
tryouts and anyone can be involved.

The intramural program has been under the management of
Christian Ozolins, who is also an assistant football coach, for
about seven years. He's in charge of choosing what sports are
included in the program and scheduling the time and place for
the events.

According to Ozolins, the main challenge with the intramural
sports is getting students to participate. As of right now, word-of-
mouth is the main way of making intramural sports known.

He said many students haven't even been in the Houston Gym
before, especially because of the large population of commuters
at Buffalo State.

"The biggest hurdle with getting intramurals out there is there
is no physical education requirement for students which
would force them to come to the Houston Gym," Ozolins
said. "Students who have never been in the gym before may not
even know about them."

The college offers seven different sports for the 2012 spring
semester: co-ed Nerf baseball, a biggest splash contest in the
pool, five-on-five basketball, Kan Jam, co-ed kickball, a flag
football league and a co-ed softball tournament.

The next event will be the co-ed kickball tournament. Applications are due by March 28, and the tournament takes
place April 1.

The flag football league will run from April 8-15. Applications are
due by April 4.

The last event of the semester is the co-ed softball tournament on April 28. Applications are due by April 18.

The complete schedule of events and all applications can be
found at www.buffalostateathletics.com, under the "Recreation
and Intramurals" tab. Applications can also be found at the
fitness center.

People who participate in the intramural sports say it gives them
something to do athletically other than being involved in a varsity
sport.

Kyle Shreve, a sophomore education major from North
Tonawanda, was the winner of the biggest splash contest that
took place last month. It was his first time participating in the
intramural sports program.

"I had fun and plan on coming back again next year for first
place," Shreve said. "I was big ever since I was little."

Participation in all intramural sports is free for Buffalo State
students as it is covered by the mandatory athletic fee. Any
supplies needed for a particular event or tournament are
provided.

Each event takes place on a facility on the Buffalo States
campus.

In Ozolins' opinion, having the addition of the new Student
Apartment Complex is good for to the intramural program. It
means more people living on campus, which means more are
likely to participate and hear about the intramural sports.

Jerry Boyes, the athletic director at Buffalo State, said that the
addition of more kids living on campus will benefit the intramural
program.

"We absolutely love that," he said. "We got to take a look
to make sure our programming meets the needs of all the
additional students."

Keeping up to date with the intramural sports that students will
want to participate in is a main goal of the program. After each
year a survey gets distributed to the participants to get feedback
on the sports students played.

"Assessment is used so we can get feedback," Boyes said. "We
ask for their thoughts with things, such if our hours are long
enough."
