Xquizit Movers brings a new element to hairstyling

Ending Xquizit Week 2013 with a bang, the Xquizit Moverz Association presented a hair show
battle called "The Fifth Element Hair Show" at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 in the Social Hall.
The Xquizit Moverz Association is a fairly new organization on campus focused on
philanthropy, community service and student success for Buffalo State students.
From March 11-16, the club held an introductory week of events and activities. These included
a social mixer, community service, a Fear Factor event for the Union Bash, and a program called
"Act like a Lady, Think like a Man," which discussed different perspectives from men and
women about love and relationships.
Jarron Mortimer, president and founder of the organization, said that this is the first hair show on
behalf of the organization, and it's biggest event thus far.
"[We want students] to know that there's a new organization on campus, and we're an
organization that likes to have fun," Mortimer said.
Mortimer has also worked with Resident Life and other organizations for the hair show that he
presented a couple semesters ago, which featured a candy-land type of theme.
Olivia Mariapen, the social action chair of the club, came up with the idea for this year's theme
after watching the 1997 movie "The Fifth Element," which was set in the 23rd century.
"I thought it was a unique world that was depicted in that movie as well as the elements that
were used," Mariapen said. "That spoke to me so much I decided to make the show about it."
Two student stylists battled it out in a total of five rounds, each centered around one of the five
elements: earth, water, wind, fire, and a mystery element the stylists chose themselves.
Students had the opportunity to participate as models in the show.
Over the past two semesters, the Xquizit Moverz held informational meetings for any students
who wanted to participate in the hair show.
Nyale Jenkins, a freshman psychology major, said that she gained an interest in participating
after going to one of the informational meetings and hearing about all the different things
planned.
"I looked forward to how the stylists were going to do my hair and makeup," Jenkins said.
The organization also brought in three local professional stylists in the Buffalo area to serve as
judges of the competition.
Mr. Ed and Stephanie Molson from Salon Toss, and Ashley Goodwin, last semester's hair show
winner, judged the competition.
Mortimer said that he was referred to many different salons throughout Buffalo, and had salons
in a matter of weeks.
Mariapen said that the organization has a lot to offer to students on campus through this hair
show and future events.
"[We want to] go out big and bad. We want to showcase what we have to offer and go out with a
big bang," Mariapen said.
