History department students unveil new academic journal

The history and social studies education department is now publishing a journal of student work, and
the first issue of "The Exposition" can now be accessed online.

Bridget Chesterton, an assistant professor in the department and managing editor for "The Exposition,"
said that she worked with the Digital Content and Curation Committee to get the journal published. The
journal, targeting alumni, faculty, students and the public, took about two years to complete.

"We wanted a way of showcasing the great work our students are doing," Chesterton said.

The first issue consists of three articles written by students including "The Elements of Creative
Environment: Was the Roycroft Campus of 1900-1915 a Hothouse?" by Katherine Somerville, "Attica
State Correctional Facility: The Causes and Fallout of the Riot of 1971" by Kathleen E. Slade and "The
Canboulay Riot of 1881: Influence of Free Blacks on Trinidad's Carnival" by John Guzda.

There is also an obituary of Monroe Fordham written by Felix Armfield , a professor in the department.

Guzda, one of the student authors, said that he was in communication with Chesterton about setting up
the journal. He also presented the research he did in his piece, "The Canboulay Riot of 1881: Influence
of Free Blacks on Trinidad's Carnival" at the first ever SUNY Latin America and Caribbean Area Studies
Conference. Additionally, he presented his work at the annual Phi Alpha Theta New York West/Central
Regional conference.

"Months of planning lead to its creation, and naturally I felt it would be important to submit one of my
papers that I was most proud of," Guzda said.

The department is hoping to have a second edition posted in late spring, according to Chesterton. "The
Exposition" is currently looking for more submissions for this edition from any graduate or
undergraduate students or alumni from Buffalo State College. According to the journal's website, "The
Exposition" welcomes any paper that studies any historical time or period. They also accept museum
studies articles and articles about teaching and learning issues in a social studies classroom.

All work submitted must be original and must not have been previously published or under
consideration at another journal whether it is print or electronic format. Also, authors have to agree not
to submit the article to another publication until the review process is completed. Articles cannot be
more than 7000 words including notes and must be submitted as a PDF, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect
or Rich Text File. Any manuscripts also have to use Chicago-style footnotes and bibliographies.

Chesterton said that she encourages students and faculty from different departments to submit their
work to The Exposition for review.

"It's a chance for students to get published," she said.
