Buffalo State College will join other institutions across the country and the world in celebrating
International Education Week.
International Education Week is a joint initiative by the United States Department of State and United
States Department of Education and is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide. The week is an
opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
Buffalo State has a jam-packed schedule of events planned for international education week, which
started Tuesday and will run through Friday.
The events formally kicked off at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Cleveland Hall with presentations by Dean Wendy
Paterson from the school of education, Jie Zhang and Bridget Chesterton, among others.
Each day, visiting scholars from China, different departments and faculty members will offer various
activities throughout campus. The events are open to all students, faculty and staff.
"The week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange
worldwide," said Michelle Eisenstein, the coordinator of services for international scholars. "We seek
to promote programs that engage the Buffalo State community through global learning, discovery and
extension through the world."
International Education Week is held to show diversity at Buffalo State and promote cultures and
backgrounds of different races.
"We are proud of what we do here at Buffalo State in terms of our international efforts because it's
critical that students have an international and global perspective, that's how you create the best possible
citizen," said Scott Johnson, the dean of university college.
Buffalo State admits more than 300 international students and scholars each year and helps them to make
a successful transition to the college and the United States.
Each year more than 200 students go on exchange to different countries and embark on various
international courses.
International Education Week is not just to celebrate the diversity brought to campus by international
students, but also the diversity brought by students who have been international students in other places
and come back with experiences and knowledge about other countries.
Jean Gounard, the director of international student affairs and a presenter during the week believes in
diversity and gaining an international perspective.
"I'm passionate about internationalism and I work very hard to empower, support and encourage people
about international education," he said. "I want to make our campus more vibrant and passionate and help
promote international affairs."
The week comes to a close with "Thinking Locally, Acting Globally...Looking Forward", which will be
presented by Kim Truesdell and Pixita Del Prada Hill, associate professors in the elementary education
and reading department.
