New school year brings opportunities for all

The start of another fall semester is upon us again, bringing new and previous
students to Buffalo State.
Old students will reunite with friends and new faces will bond quickly over the first
few weeks of school. Before we know it, the majority of our campus will move into
the everyday life of a college student. They'll go to class, devote hours to homework
and spend the remaining time with friends.
It's easy to get sucked into the day-to-day of the college experience, and it's tough to
get out, especially as the semester moves on and exam grades loom overhead.
It's important for students to avoid the mid-semester lull. Fortunately, there
are endless opportunities on campus to try new things, starting with student
organizations and clubs.
College is not about grades. If you go to school for four years, never miss a class and
ace every exam, you still would have sold yourself short on your college experience.
College is about making connections, networking, gaining experience and becoming
a well-rounded student, if not a well-rounded person.
If you're a math major, you can join the math club. If you like broadcasting, you can
get involved with the radio station. If you're athletic, Buffalo State has 17 Division III
varsity sports and three club teams.
Buffalo State is nationally renowned for its arts and humanities department and is
surrounded by great opportunities.
No matter what you're passionate about, Buffalo State has something to help
cultivate that passion.
For those who are new Buffalo, it could take some time to adapt to your new
surroundings.
Don't feel overwhelmed.
Buffalo is the biggest small town in the country. There are plenty of attractions and
friendly people on campus or a few steps away that will make you feel right at home.
It's important to remember, though, not to get caught up in the initial shock of
college. Enjoy it. Take it all in. But remember the reasons you're really here, and be
sure to make your next four years the most worthwhile experience of your life.
College is what you make of it, and if you do it all right, the possibilities will be
endless the second you walk across the stage.
So, for those who are new to Buffalo and Buffalo State, welcome. For those
returning, it's good to have you back. Now let's show everyone else out there what
they're missing out on and all the great things we can accomplish.
