Students use summer to create film

Buffalo State film students took over the first floor of the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery
during the week of June 12 to shoot a film written, directed and produced by media
production major Brandon Williams.
The on-location filming of "Feeble Attraction" was completed in three days, ending June 15,
said director of photography Kraig Adams.
"It was a tough three days but we did it," he said. "By the end the crew was a team treating
it as a job rather than as something just for fun."
Now that filming is done, Williams said he is going to put together a trailer and begin the
editing process, which he suspects will take most of July, and then plans to submit the film
to the Buffalo Film Festival on Aug. 1.
The movie is a comedy in which two socially awkward men, struggling to pick-up women,
go to Craigslist for help from the movie's antagonist, a jerk who tries to help the main
characters pick up women by changing their clothes, hair and personalities. Once the
characters realize they have turned into jerks as well, they learn to keep trying while
remaining true to themselves.
"I saw a guy with a big truck take two parking spots and I wished I could do something,"
Williams said. "That's when I got the idea for the whole movie."
Williams approached Adams with the script for the movie at the beginning of the spring
semester.
"We had been wanting to work together for a while. It was funny, needed a little work but it
had a lot of potential," Adams said.
Julia Squilla, the production designer for the film, said she was also approached by Williams
to look over the script and help with the flow since the two knew each other from classes.
"Most of us knew each other from work and school and it was great to work with everyone
who loves film and has a passion for what we do," Squilla said.
Because the cast, including roughly 30 extras, was spread from Buffalo to Rochester, Adams
said it took a lot of work to organize.
"It was difficult at first with everyone coming in from different places," he said. "Once we
were there it was fine. John (Szablewski) and Kyle (Mecca) did a lot behind the scenes to
keep it moving."
Working at Pearl Street was made easy thanks to the staff, Squilla said.
"Pearl Street gave such a realistic environment and accommodated us for whatever we
wanted to do," she said.
Adams said he agreed that Pearl Street was very nice and added that the bartender was
there the entire time to help serve food and drinks for the film.
In addition to Szablewski and Mecca, the crew consisted of Buffalo State students Joe
Blodgett and Terrence Harding and the cast, from the Buffalo and Rochester area, was
Jacob Kolenberg, Lisa Dee, Aaron Fisher, Dick Hy Jr., Ben Sadd and Linda Sekhano.
