The Buffalo State women's basketball team won its first road game of the season
Monday night with a 69-56 victory over crosstown rival D'Youville in a non-conference
matchup that was closer than the score indicated.
"Honestly, I thought we were lucky to get out of their with the win," head coach Sue
Roarke said. "We made a lot of mistakes on both ends of the court and luckily for us we
made some shots that put us over the top."
Sophomore guard Olivia Luciani sparked the Bengals' offense off the bench, netting a
career-high 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a career-high five 3-pointers.
"They played a lot of zone so I thought they opened up for me to shoot and luckily for
myself they went in," Luciani said.
Bianca Smiley registered her first double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points
and 14 rebounds to go with four steals. Ashley Wallace also had a double-double with
12 points and 11 boards.
"It was an ugly game for us," Smiley said. "I thought our transition defense was not up to
par and that's where they got a lot of their offense from so we definitely have to improve
in that area, especially with conference play this weekend."
Smiley also noted that staying in games will take a team effort.
"Any shooting or rebounding help I can get is what's key for us because on nights when
I'm having a bad game my teammates will have to keep us in the game, and I know they
can," she said.
The Bengals led by just two at the half, 29-27, but used a quick nine-point run to start
the second to pad their lead. The Spartans made a run of their own, tying the score at
49 with less than seven minutes left, but the Bengals assembled another run to secure
the win.
The Bengals out-rebounded the Spartans 48-29 while outscoring their bench, 28-0.
"I thought we capitalized on a team that's not very deep," Roarke said. "That's why we
did a lot of pressing in the beginning but the back end of it is what hurt us."
Freshman Kelly Kell got her second-consecutive start at the point and finished with two
points, three assists and three turnovers.
"The position is not locked as of yet," Roarke said of the team's situation at point
guard. "It will depend on practice and who has a good week, and this week will be of
great importance before conference play begins."
With the win, the Bengals improved to 2-1 on the season. They open conference play
this weekend with a rematch of last year's SUNYAC championship game against
Oneonta followed by a matchup against New Paltz.
